Surprisingly little has been heard about the subject of cloud PLM in the last few months. Might that be the calm before the storm? You get the impression that PLM vendors and many user companies are crouched at the starting line, waiting for the starting shot but don't yet dare to extend their legs because they don't want to risk jumping the gun. And that even though the seemingly endless coronavirus pandemic offers an ideal opportunity to start modernizing the now aging PLM landscapes and trying out one or two new things.
An interview with Iris Gräßler
In collaboration with a consortium of research institutes, software houses and user companies, PROSTEP is developing a model-based solution approach that is intended to simplify impact analysis. In this interview, Professor Iris Gräßler of Paderborn University, who heads up the consortium project, explains why many companies are still struggling with model-based systems engineering (MBSE).

At PROSTEP TECHDAY a year ago, we presented the development plans for our PLM integration platform OpenPDM, our data exchange platform OpenDXM GlobalX and our new OpenCLM solution for creating digital threads and ensuring traceability. Now we want to show you what progress the three product families have made and where the development path is leading.

How do manufacturers of software-heavy products strike a balance between PLM and ALM? This is the question examined by a PROSTEP study for which companies from a number of different industries were surveyed. A key finding of the study is that the level of integration between product and application lifecycle management is currently insufficient to ensure end-to-end digitalization and traceability.

The objective of the joint ImPaKT project is to make the impact of changes transparent across domains using a model-based, AI-assisted approach. Following the completion of a market survey on the use of IT and the degree to which MBSE is being utilized, the project partners, which include PROSTEP, are now defining the reference architecture for impact analyses.

PROSTEP is deepening its long-standing partnership with Siemens Digital Industries Software by developing an OpenPDM connector to Polarion, Siemens' application lifecycle management (ALM) system. Automotive supplier Kautex will be the first customer to trial the OpenPDM integration platform with the new connector to synchronize ALM data with its development partners.

Siemens' Active Workspace client makes it easy for users who don't work with Teamcenter all the time to access PLM information using all the leading office applications or any web browser. Thanks to integration of client in the OpenDXM GlobalX data exchange platform, they can now also send their CAD and PLM data directly from Active Workspace.
The Infrachain Summit focuses on different aspects of blockchain technology. This year the meeting, which was held simultaneously in Bologna, Luxembourg and virtually, addressed use cases in Industry 4.0, the circular economy and creative industries. PROSTEP presented the solution for the tamper-proof exchange of 3D print data developed as part of the SAMPL project.

The progressive digitalization and connectivity of industrial value chains offer new approaches and opportunities for a more sustainable economy, according to the conviction of Plattform Industrie 4.0. The "Digital Business Models" working group has formulated ten theses on this subject, which postulate how digital business models can increase sustainability in industry 4.0.
PROSTEP began delivering the new version 9.3 of OpenDXM GlobalX to maintenance customers via the GlobalX portal at the end of November. The data exchange platform's graphical web interface, which has been very well received by users, now also includes all system administration functions. What is new for users is that they can now create their own serial reports in the new web interface.
A core task of OpenCLM is the communication of data sets across company and domain boundaries. In this new video, we show you how our solution supports the exchange of all necessary information by using neutral formats. This enables OpenCLM to work efficiently across companies in virtual validation processes and thereby prove functional security.

Companies need flexibly adaptable IT system landscapes if they are to respond more quickly to technological innovations, new market trends and unexpected customer requirements. One possible option is to use PLM from the cloud. In a new white paper, PROSTEP explores the drivers of cloud PLM and what companies should bear in mind on their way to the cloud.

The SmartSE project of the prostep ivip association goes into the next round. Time for an interim review. In a web seminar, the project partners, including PROSTEP, provided an overview of the activities currently underway and those planned for the future. One of the showcases demonstrated how simulation tasks and results can be exchanged in a traceable way across several partners and tools.
