PROSTEP demonstrates synchronization of requirements via Catena-X

By Johannes Lützenberger

As part of the Collaborative Digital Twins (CDT) project, PROSTEP has demonstrated how easy it is to connect its digital thread platform, which includes the OpenPDM and OpenDXM brands, to the Catena-X data ecosystem. Requirements can be synchronized in a semantically correct manner between different IT systems based on the aspect models defined by Catena-X.

In the early phase of product development, development partners usually exchange requirements multiple times in order to coordinate development objectives and specifications. This exchange was previously performed asynchronously using a file-based approach. Even changing a single requirement often made it necessary to export, send, adapt and re-import an entire document. A process that could easily take several days.

The demonstrator now being presented was developed as part of the prostep ivip Association's CDT project. PROSTEP was able to draw on extensive experience gained in previous projects and contribute it to the demonstrator

The aim of one of the main use cases in the CDT project is the ability to exchange individual requirements between different parties at a very early stage, for example during the offer phase, import them into the relevant systems and process them. As a reference demonstrator, the aim was to subject it to realistic testing using Catena-X.

It quickly became clear that connecting existing requirements management systems to the Catena-X infrastructure is a crucial success factor. Added value that the time-tested PROSTEP system connectors deliver immediately. The connection to 3DEXPERIENCE and CATIA Magic in the demonstrator was established so to speak "out of the box" using the PROSTEP connector. PROSTEP's mapping service also assumes responsibility for mapping the data between the system and the Catena-X aspect model. This ensures seamless integration of the management systems.

In the demonstration scenario, PROSTEP acts as the OEM, creating its requirements in Catia Magic (formerly known as Cameo) and managing them in the 3DExperience platform. The two other development partners were represented by Accenture and SSC. The demonstration involved the bidirectional exchange of requirements between the participating companies. The final demonstrator was recently presented to a larger group of participants in the CDT project and was very well received. Project managers Sebastian Handschuh (Mercedes-Benz) and Peter Gerber (Schaeffler) applauded the milestone reached and the successful testing of the use cases developed in the CDT project.

PROSTEP had previously contributed its new Eclipse Dataspace Connector (EDC), which was developed in the Decide4ECO project, to the activities in Manufacturing-X. The new demonstrator based on Catena-X now clearly shows that OpenPDM and OpenDXM are Catena-X ready. The "last mile" between the data ecosystem and management systems has been bridged. Our customers can be certain that OpenPDM and OpenDXM will also allow them to collaborate effectively and securely with their partners in future data ecosystems.
