PROSTEP develops service offering for cloud-native PLM integration

By Peter Pfalzgraf

PROSTEP's PLM integration platform OpenPDM can be used in hybrid cloud scenarios since version 9.0. In the future, we will also offer it as an integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS). In close cooperation with Arena, a PTC Business, we are currently developing a cloud-enabled standard integration between PTC's cloud-native PLM solution Arena, and Atlassian's ALM application Jira, which is also cloud-native.

More and more European manufacturers embrace the cloud and look to adopt Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions as part of their digital transformation journey.  PTC is committed to support European companies, by hosting Arena PLM and QMS (quality management system) locally in Germany and providing a German user interface. When it comes to integrate the solution with other enterprise applications, the company is cooperating with PROSTEP’s PLM experts.

According to analysts, integrating cloud PLM and QMS systems with other enterprise applications is one of the biggest hurdles on the road to digital transformation. PROSTEP has set out to remove this hurdle. For several years now, we have been consistently developing the software architecture of our PLM integration platform, OpenPDM, to enable it for cloud use and to optimally support the connection of different cloud and on premises applications.

Our strategic goal is to provide the integrations as a service from the cloud in the future.

In the first step, we are developing a standardized and configurable integration solution based on OpenPDM between the PLM and QMS solutions from cloud PLM pioneer Arena and the ALM solutions Jira from Atlassian. Arena has been part of PTC since the beginning of 2021. Jira is one of the leading application lifecycle management (ALM) solutions for planning, tracking, and release management in the software development process.

The integration between Arena and Jira will have a predefined feature set so that it can be deployed with few configuration steps. For example, it supports the synchronization of issues or error messages created in Jira to Arena. There, a corresponding ticket is automatically created and assigned to an employee for processing. If the issue changes in Jira, the corresponding ticket is updated in Arena.

The OpenPDM platform, which controls the synchronization process and synchronizes the data, is implemented together with the two connectors in the cloud infrastructure of AWS. In the coming months, we will add more standard integrations to our iPaaS offering.
