Java Web Start Technology for OpenDXM GlobalX

by Udo Hering

PROSTEP announces the new version 8.3 of its web-based data exchange solution OpenDXM GlobalX, which now no longer needs Java applets. The company's software developers have created an alternative solution based on Java Web Start technology that allows users to continue to use GlobalX functions in the web browser without limitation and without the need to become familiar with a new environment.

Applets written in Java, which could be embedded in websites, were for a long time the latest rage since they made it possible, for the first time, to distribute applications worldwide and thus make the Internet more interactive. The browser plug-ins, however, increasingly revealed themselves to pose a security risk, which is why all leading web browser vendors have since withdrawn or will be discontinuing their support. This is also the reason why the software vendor Oracle will no longer be providing support for the Java browser plug-in as from the coming version of the Java Development Kit.

PROSTEP has developed an alternative solution, which is based on Java Web Start technology and does not need plug-ins, to ensure that OpenDXM GlobalX users can continue to transfer large amounts of data reliably and securely using their web browser. This solution will be available at the beginning of next year with the release of version 8.3. The new functionality was demonstrated for the first time at PROSTEP's TECHDAY in Darmstadt and was well received by customers.
