OpenCLM with enhanced impact analysis and maturity monitoring

By Rainer Zeifang

PROSTEP is launching the new version 1.2 of its OpenCLM solution for digital thread and end-to-end traceability. In addition to enhanced capabilities for cross-domain impact analysis, automated baselining and maturity monitoring, it provides even better support for the cross-enterprise exchange of structural and metadata for simulation.

An important new feature in OpenCLM, suggested by a number of different customers, is predefined impact analyses. Users can now generate a cross-domain where-used list with just a few clicks of the mouse, which allows them to determine which artifacts and information objects are being used in which projects. It also makes it easier to analyze which objects are affected by a change and which changes have an impact on which objects.

Significant improvements have been made with regard to the ability to visualize cross-domain relationships between artifacts and illustrate their level of maturity. Project-specific dashboards are available to help users keep track of project activities. PROSTEP’s developers have integrated Gantt charts in the software for the purpose of maturity monitoring. They have also further improved the user interface to make it even easier for users to tailor it to meet their specific needs.

As part of the joint project SETLevel, PROSTEP and renowned consortium partners from the automotive industry and science community have laid the foundation for the trustworthy exchange of simulation data and mapped it as a credible simulation process (CSP) in OpenCLM. Workflow and access rights have been extended in the new version in such a way that they can now also be applied to individual information objects.

The digital thread solution also supports the export and import of simulation data in the data formats SSP (System Structure and Parametrization) and STMD (Simulation Task Meta Data).

The new feature provides the basis for the cross-enterprise exchange of simulation data and is an important step on the way to a CSP “round trip”. The project partners’ idea is for OEMs to collect simulation-relevant data from the different domains in a package and make it available to their suppliers for simulations. Once the simulations have been completed, they get the extended package back from the suppliers and check it back into OpenCLM or the connected backend systems.

Among other things, OpenCLM is used to "freeze" the development versions of the different domains at certain milestones as baselines with the aim of ensuring that their development history can be traced. This process has been extended in the new version to include the option of creating this type of baseline automatically when the status of the work steps changes or when a milestone has been achieved. Automation helps further improve the traceability of the development processes and deliverables.

OpenCLM can be used to link information from all enterprise applications, which can be connected to the OpenPDM integration platform. PROSTEP has rounded out its portfolio of connectors with the launch of the new version.

OpenCLM 1.2 is now available. Thanks to the enhancements and improvements, the digital thread solution can now be used productively to manage the development of smart products that include a high proportion of electronics and software more efficiently and ensure cross-domain traceability.
