CAD Preview facilitates PDM Import with OpenDXM GlobalX

Integration of the OpenDXM GlobalX data exchange solution in widely used PLM systems like 3DEXPERIENCE, Teamcenter, SAP/ECTR and Windchill has the advantage that processes like data export and import can be automated to a greater extent. PROSTEP has now expanded the import scenarios to include a component for batch processing that automatically generates previews of CAD geometries in commonly used native and neutral formats. We use the 3D libraries from Tech Soft 3D, a long-time partner, to generate the preview files.

The new function allows users to visually inspect new CAD files that they receive from an external partner prior to launching the final import process and creating the corresponding components and assemblies in their PLM systems. OpenDXM GlobalX automatically prepares the data received and sends an e-mail to the recipients, informing them that new data is available for import. Users start the import process from their familiar PDM application and a wizard guides them through the import steps.

The new function not only supports the import of new components and assemblies but also round-trip scenarios. The users can compare the CAD files they receive with the original files that they sent to the partner. Three different views are available: The view of the CAD geometry sent, the view of the CAD geometry received and a difference view in which the two geometries are superimposed on each other and the changes are highlighted in color. 
Once they have made sure that the partner has made the correct changes, they then have the option of importing only the modified components. 

OpenDXM GlobalX currently generates previews for the native CAD formats CATIA V5, Creo, NX and Solidworks as well as for the neutral formats STEP and JT. We also provide support for other CAD formats if requested by the customer.
