VARD Marine tests OpenPDM SHIP Integration between NAPA and ShipConstructor

By Matthias Grau

Like many shipbuilding companies, VARD Marine uses different CAD systems for ship structure design, detail design and production engineering. To enable loss-free transfer of design data from NAPA to ShipConstructor, the renowned shipbuilding consulting firm has set up a test environment with PROSTEP's powerful OpenPDM SHIP integrations.

VARD Marine is a consulting company for ship architecture design and engineering founded in 1983 that specializes in the development of advanced technologies and their application in the design of vessels for the commercial and military markets. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vard Group AS (Norway) and is therefore part of Fincantieri S.p.A. VARD Marine offers advanced design, engineering, and technology services to customers in North America and around the world. These include all aspects of ship design and production technology, equipment and service packages to support shipbuilding activities, economic and technical feasibility studies, research and analysis studies, model tests and full-scale trials, as well as production support during construction.

The company's engineers use NAPA Steel 3D modeling software to develop ship structures. For detailed design and work preparation, they need to convert the NAPA models into a manufacturing-ready model format such as AVEVA Marine or ShipConstructor.

To assess and improve the existing design workflows, VARD Marine is working with PROSTEP, the provider of the NAPA to ShipConstructor conversion solution, in a structured test environment. This collaboration helps PROSTEP validate its tool set and enables VARD Marine to demonstrate reliable conversion capabilities to its customers.

PROSTEP is providing its proven OpenPDM SHIP integration solution for the collaboration. In addition to integrations with common PLM and ERP systems, it offers powerful connectors to mechanical and shipbuilding-specific CAD systems, which make it possible to convert CAD models, e.g., from NAPA, including semantics, into ShipConstructor or other shipbuilding-specific CAD system formats with virtually no loss of data. OpenPDM SHIP thus contributes significantly to improving digital continuity and shortening development cycles in shipbuilding.
