PROSTEP, Inc. develops Integration between PLM and MES Worlds

By Joseph Lopez

PROSTEP, Inc., the US subsidiary of the leading PLM consulting and solutions company PROSTEP, has expanded its portfolio of standard integrations based on the OpenPDM platform. The new integration enables automated data exchange between the PLM solution Teamcenter from Siemens Digital Industries Software and the MES system Solumina from iBASEt. It is being used for the first time at Purdue Polytechnic Institute in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Digital consistency between product development and production is the basis for greater flexibility in production processes, faster ramp-up of production lines and more intelligent control of the entire production process. However, this is often hindered by gaps in the digital processes. Unlike ERP systems, MES systems are not well integrated with the PLM world.

The Intelligent Manufacturing Testbed at Purdue Polytechnic's Indiana Manufacturing Competitiveness Center (IN-MaC) demonstrates that there are better ways. In close cooperation with PROSTEP, it has created an integration solution that allows parts information and BOMs to be extracted automatically from Teamcenter, converted into the OAGIS XML format, and imported into Solumina together with JT files and other documents. The basis for data export and mapping is PROSTEP's leading integration platform OpenPDM in combination with the Teamcenter SOA connector.

Data synchronization only takes place in one direction and can be initiated by triggers such as a status change.

The new integration solution allows Solumina users to avoid manually entering part information and BOMs, saving time and eliminating input errors. As a result, manufacturing BOMs in the MES system are created much more easily and quickly based on the engineering BOM from the PLM system.

Purdue Polytechnic Institute is one of ten academic colleges at Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana. IN-MaC's Intelligent Manufacturing Testbed explores the application of digital techniques to transform manufacturing methods and tools to overcome the barriers of digital continuity and meet the challenges of Industry 4.0. We are excited to be part of the digital transformation solutions showcased at Purdue’s IN-MaC.
